Weather Information and Images for Bakersfield

Sensor Maintenance (Updated 12-29-08)
We cleaned and restored the rain gage over the weekend,  We are still evaluating the fix as the electronics are drying out. Data dropouts have been happening at random times.  We are continuing to resolve the issues.

NOAA POES SATELLITE IMAGES COMING SOON
We've installed and are evaluating equipment to receive direct images from the NOAA POES (Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites) NOAA-15, NOAA-16, NOAA-17 and NOAA-18.  See this example image:

This image from from NOAA-18 on December 29, 2008.

When we install a Turnstile Antenna, these images will greatly improve in quality.
New images will be posted directly after reception up to 8 times per day depending on the Satellite passes over Bakersfield. This update should take place in the next month.

We operate a weather station at our home 24/7.
NOAA Weather Radio for Bakersfield, California is streamed online from our location 24/7.

How do we make the NOAA stream work?
It starts with an external antenna.  We use a 1/4 wave ground plane antenna for 162.550 Mhz at 25 feet high.  Coax runs from the antenna to an old Uniden Bearcat 210XL scanner tuned to the NOAA broadcast. The audio from the scanner runs to a sound card line input on our Weather Server computer. (P3 600mhz Dell with 384mb of memory and Windows XPpro)  Using Oddcast-V3, we digitize the audio and send the stream to Weather Underground for world wide web distribution.
